Irene Kim, a 29-year-old dedicated Swiftie who spends much of her time engaging with other fans online, quickly took action after Harris announced her bid for the presidency. Together with other Swift supporters, she helped build a volunteer-led movement, “Swifties for Kamala.” Through social media campaigns, memes, and even montages, they aim to harness the enthusiasm of fellow fans to bolster Harris’ candidacy.

Kim, now the executive director of the Swifties for Kamala group, describes how the movement has naturally developed. Although she has no previous experience in political campaigns, she and her fellow fans have leveraged their online organizing skills from years spent strategizing on everything from securing concert tickets to auctioning Taylor Swift merchandise. These skills are now being used to raise funds and recruit volunteers. Since August 1, the group has raised more than $165,000 for the Harris campaign.

With over 3,500 volunteers, Swifties for Kamala functions almost like a political operation itself. However, it remains independent from the official Harris campaign, although there is collaboration between the two. According to Kim, the conversations with the campaign team are “surprisingly casual,” with the campaign helping to facilitate activities like volunteer sign-ups, canvassing efforts, and training for both in-person and virtual outreach, including phone and text banking.

The Swifties for Kamala group is seen as a vital part of the Harris campaign’s strategy to engage younger, often disengaged voters. Swift’s endorsement is expected to boost voter registration and mobilize a significant number of fans who might not have otherwise participated in the election. The group’s creative use of memes and authentic social media posts helps to spread Harris’ message in a way that feels more personal and less corporate than traditional ads.

Kim noted that the level of excitement and engagement has reached new heights, describing the post-endorsement atmosphere as “absolute madness in the best way.”

With millions of Swifties ready to mobilize, Kamala Harris’ campaign has found a powerful ally in Taylor Swift and her fanbase.
